Business expenses worth reviewing every year in New Zealand
Costs rarely jump all at once. They creep. A yearly review stops small increases from becoming a large drain on profit. Here is where to look first.
Subscriptions and software
Tools get added and rarely removed. List every subscription and ask who uses it and what it does for the business.
Insurance
Check that cover still matches what you own and do. Compare quotes through a broker rather than auto-renewing.
Banking and finance
Fees, interest rates and loan structures change. Ask whether your current arrangements still suit the business.
Vehicles
Look at running costs, fuel, leasing and whether each vehicle is earning its keep.
Suppliers
Prices and terms can often be renegotiated, especially if you have been a reliable customer. Compare at least one alternative quote on your biggest supply costs.
Staff costs
Look at roster, productivity and overtime before looking at headcount. Cutting hours or people is rarely the best first step.
A word of caution: cutting a cost that supports sales, quality or compliance can cost more than it saves. Tax treatment also varies depending on the type of expense, so check with your accountant before making changes.
